DMC – the ultimate competition to determine the best DJs in Japan and the world ! JAPAN FINAL, the decisive battle to crown Japan’s No.1 DJ, will be held at WOMBLIVE on Sat Aug 30 !
Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, DMC WORLD DJ CHAMPIONSHIPS is the world’s biggest DJ competition. It has launched the careers of countless globally recognized talents, including A-Trak, DJ Craze, and more recently, artists like Hudson Mohawke and Cashmere Cat. Japan has been hosting its national DMC championships since 1990, during the early days of the scene. It has produced world champions such as DJ KENTARO and DJ IZOH. In 2017, DJ RENA, at just 12 years old, broke A-Trak’s long-standing record to become the youngest-ever DMC World Champion.In 2019, DJ MATSUNAGA rose to the top as World Champion, leading to numerous TV appearances, a DJ performance at the Tokyo Olympic closing ceremony, and massive success as part of the duo CREEPY NUTS with R-SHITEI including selling out a show at Tokyo Dome. Today, Japan is recognized as one of the strongest countries in the world in the DMC scene. To resonate with the ever-diversifying DJ culture, DMC JAPAN has undergone an update this year as well.
The former Single Category has been renamed to CLASSIC, the Battle Category is now called BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY, and two new categories have been introduced: SCRATCH BATTLE, where turntablists compete in scratching skills, and THE OPEN, which showcases advanced mixing techniques and storytelling. These categories will determine Japan’s top DJs and who will qualify for WORLD FINAL with all battles culminating at JAPAN FINAL. The finalists who have emerged victorious from the fierce qualifying rounds range from former Japan champions to high school students representing the next generation. This year’s lineup is more diverse than ever in terms of age and gender, including, for the first time in DMC history, a mother and daughter both competing in the JAPAN FINAL, though in different categories. In both the CLASSIC and BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY divisions, the reigning champions have declared their intent to defend their titles. You can’t miss seeing if they can keep their titles.
The guest showcase will feature a collaboration set by DJ SHOTA, a two-time Japanese champion at DMC, and DJ SANTA MONICA from the monster band MAN WITH A MISSION. Also, DJ IKU, the Japanese champion of THRE3STYLE who performs many gigs both domestically and internationally, will present a special session with KAJI, a member of SARUKANI, the world beatbox champion. Additionally, Shingo Takahashi, known for his 7-inch performances that have gone viral on social media, will open DMC JAPAN FINAL.
